10 Remote NGO & UN Work Opportunities and Platforms
Practical pathways for remote volunteering, humanitarian work, development careers and social-impact opportunities
International NGOs and UN agencies routinely receive large numbers of applications for remote roles. That competition is not a reason to give up; it is a reason to use a more specific and targeted approach.
Below are ten organisations and platforms relevant to remote NGO, UN, humanitarian and social-impact work, together with practical guidance on what they look for and how applicants can approach each pathway strategically.
1. UN Volunteers – Online Volunteering
Who it's for: Beginners seeking UN-connected volunteering experience without requiring years of humanitarian-sector experience.
What they do: UN Online Volunteering provides opportunities to contribute remotely to organisations around the world through areas such as research, writing, translation, graphic design and IT support.
Eligibility: Volunteers must generally be at least 18 years old, while individual assignments establish their own requirements.
How to apply strategically: Build a focused profile around one or two clear skills rather than presenting yourself as an expert in everything human civilisation has ever invented. Start with specific assignments that match your demonstrated skills and build a verifiable record of completed work.
2. Translators Without Borders / CLEAR Global
🔗 translatorswithoutborders.org
Who it's for: People with strong multilingual abilities, particularly those who can translate accurately between English and other languages.
What they do: Translators Without Borders, now operating under CLEAR Global, connects language professionals and volunteers with humanitarian and development work involving crisis information, health communication, education and other important content.
How to apply strategically: Complete language assessments honestly and focus on accuracy. Relevant volunteer work can help establish a demonstrable track record for future humanitarian and translation opportunities.
3. Catholic Relief Services (CRS)
Who it's for: Professionals and emerging professionals with skills in programme coordination, finance, communications, monitoring and evaluation, operations and related areas.
What they do: CRS operates internationally across humanitarian and development programmes. Some roles may offer remote or hybrid arrangements, depending on the specific vacancy and employment location.
How to apply strategically: Never assume that an organisation-wide remote policy means every vacancy is remote. Check the individual job description, work-authorisation requirements and location conditions before applying.
4. Amnesty International
Who it's for: Writers, researchers, campaigners, policy professionals and digital communications specialists.
What they do: Amnesty International works across human rights research, advocacy, campaigns, communications and related areas. Remote arrangements vary by vacancy and office.
How to apply strategically: Study the organisation's campaigns and current priorities before applying. A specific, credible reference to relevant work demonstrates genuine interest far better than the timeless classic: “I am passionate about helping people.”
5. World Vision

Who it's for: Professionals in programme management, communications, grants, finance, technology, data and related areas.
What they do: World Vision works in humanitarian, development and child-focused programmes, with different positions offering different work arrangements.
How to apply strategically: Highlight practical community involvement, volunteer experience and evidence that you can work effectively with people and programmes. Always use the organisation's official recruitment channels.
6. Impactpool
Who it's for: Candidates targeting UN agencies, international organisations, NGOs and international-development careers, from entry level through experienced positions.
What they do: Impactpool is a specialised career platform focused on international organisations and development-sector opportunities, including remote and consultancy positions.
How to apply strategically: Create a focused professional profile and use relevant search filters rather than relying solely on broad searches. A narrow, credible skills profile is more useful than an application that tries to cover every profession simultaneously.
7. DevelopmentAid
Who it's for: Consultants and specialists seeking international development, technical advisory, research, finance, M&E and other contract opportunities.
What they do: DevelopmentAid provides access to development-sector opportunities, including consulting and home-based assignments.
How to apply strategically: This platform is particularly useful when you already have a specific professional niche. Position yourself around a clearly defined area of expertise instead of marketing yourself as “hardworking, passionate and willing to do anything.”
8. NGO Jobs in Africa
Who it's for: African job seekers targeting NGO and development-sector opportunities across the continent.
What they do: The platform focuses specifically on NGO opportunities in Africa and can help applicants locate international, regional and local opportunities.
How to apply strategically: Use country and location filters to find opportunities relevant to your market. Regional targeting can reduce the noise created by global searches.
9. ReliefWeb
Who it's for: Candidates pursuing humanitarian, emergency response, development and international NGO careers.
What they do: ReliefWeb is administered by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and provides humanitarian information and job listings.
How to apply strategically: Use relevant remote, roster and roving filters where available, and combine ReliefWeb with specialist platforms to widen coverage. Do not rely on a single job board unless your career strategy is based on hoping that one website remembers your birthday.
10. Idealist
Who it's for: Beginners, career changers and professionals seeking opportunities throughout the wider social-impact sector.
What they do: Idealist connects people with jobs, internships, volunteer opportunities and other social-impact opportunities across a broad range of causes and organisations.
How to apply strategically: Combine location, experience level and issue-area filters to narrow the search. This is particularly useful when you are open to nonprofit and social-impact organisations beyond traditional international NGOs.
A QUICK HONEST NOTE
- Remote NGO and international-organisation roles can attract intense competition.
- A generic CV and generic cover letter are unlikely to differentiate you effectively.
- Targeted volunteering can help you build relevant evidence when you lack formal sector experience.
- Always verify vacancies through the organisation's official careers page before submitting documents or personal information.
- Never pay a recruiter for a job, interview, visa, onboarding or “processing” simply because somebody moved the conversation to WhatsApp or Telegram and became mysteriously urgent.
HOW TO APPROACH REMOTE NGO JOBS
A stronger strategy is to combine breadth with specialisation.
Step 1: Select one target career area such as M&E, communications, programme support, finance, translation, research, HR or data.
Step 2: Identify the recurring keywords and competencies across several vacancies.
Step 3: Rewrite your CV around those genuine skills and experiences.
Step 4: Build one visible piece of evidence such as a research report, project brief, M&E dashboard, translation sample or communications portfolio.
Step 5: Apply consistently across several relevant platforms instead of waiting for one application to save the day.
THE REALITY
- You do not necessarily need years of formal NGO employment before you can begin building a development-sector profile.
- Volunteer assignments, community work, internships and relevant project experience can create useful evidence when positioned honestly.
- The strongest applications demonstrate a specific skill, relevant evidence and a clear connection to the organisation's work.
- Free search and application options should generally be explored before paying for premium recruitment features.
- Combining a broad platform such as ReliefWeb or Idealist with a specialist platform such as DevelopmentAid or Impactpool can provide a better search strategy than relying on one website.
BUILD YOUR REMOTE NGO CAREER STRATEGICALLY
Do not chase every remote vacancy you see. Choose a target career path, build evidence around it, tailor your applications and apply consistently.
